A fully Government owned company named as Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) was incorporated under the Companies act of 1994 on 03 June 2013 to establish, operate and maintain including the planning, survey, designing, financing of a state-of-the-art Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) or Metro Rail Network in Dhaka Metropolis and adjoining areas to reduce traffic congestion and improve the environment.

To reduce the traffic congestion by providing fast, safe, reliable, air-conditioned, time saving, electricity driven, environment-friendly, remote controlled state-of-the-art public transport system for Dhaka city and its adjoining areas.
Time-bound Action Plan 2030
The Government of Bangladesh has formulated the following Time-bound Action Plan in order to establish a state-of-the-art strong Network of public transport system to be implemented by Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) consisting of 6 Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) or Metro Rail routes covering the distance of 128.741 Kilometers having 104 Stations in Dhaka city and its adjoining areas.
* As per the directives of Honourable Prime Minister works for detailed design and land acquisition is underway to extend MRT Line-6 by 1.16 kilometers from Motijheel to Kamlapur.
